The Jackie Robinson West All-Stars Little League Baseball Team.
Is an all-Black team of rising baseball stars from Morgan Park, a neighborhood of Chicago’s South Side. During the World Series opener in Williamsburg, Pa the team beat Lynnwood, Washington team via the mercy rule with a score of 12-2!!! (Mercy Rule Definition:brings a sports event to an early end when one team has a very large and presumably insurmountable lead over the other team.)
Bill Haley, whose father founded the team in 1971. “When you see kids from similar backgrounds and similar situations, you pull for them to be successful and beat the odds,” he told the New York Times.
Like their team’s namesake, Jackie Robinson, who first broke baseball’s color barrier 67 years ago, these boys also dream of the majors. They believe the passion they share for baseball will help them win it all.
The Team will compete against other leagues from around the globe, in hopes of winning the little league’s highest honor.
The Jackie Robinson West All-Stars take on their next competitor, the Mountain Ridge Little League of Las Vegas, Nevada August 17.
